The best Bloody Mary

Secret family recipe: The classic margarita

Blue Agave is good for your bones.

Drinking Tequila Is Good for Your Bones. New study finds that blue agave consumption makes your bones strong

Get your salted rims and limes ready! There’s now yet another reason to drink tequila: bone health. We already know that tequila helps digestion and can balance gut bacteria, but a new study published by scientists at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Mexico theorizes that regular moderate consumption of tequila could help prevent the advance of osteoporosis.

Blue agave — the variety that’s found in tequila — can help improve magnesium absorption, which is essential for strong bones.“The consumption of fructans contained in the agave [plant], in collaboration with adequate intestinal microbiota, promotes the formation of new bone, even with the presence of osteoporosis,” Dr. Mercedes Lopez, a co-author of the study, said in a statement.

The study found that after eight weeks of consuming fructans from the agave plant, lab mice had improved bone density. Lopez hopes that this could signal future alternative treatments for bone diseases.

Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita

Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita

Ingredients

1/2 cup fresh lime juice

1/2 cup white tequila

1/4 cup orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier

1/4 cup simple syrup, or more as needed

4 thin slices cucumber

1 jalapeno, halved lengthwise

Ice, for serving

Salt for glass rims, optional

Directions

Mix together the lime juice, tequila, orange liqueur, simple syrup, cucumber and jalapenos in a large pitcher. Chill for at least 1 hour (the longer the margarita sits, the more the cucumber and jalapeno flavors infuse into the drink). Serve over ice in salt-rimmed glasses, if desired.
