AFC - NFC Championship Games

Battle for the George S. Halas and Lamar Hunt Trophy

The two teams playing in the Championship games this Sunday are competing for trophies you may have never heard of: The winner of the NFC gets the George S. Halas trophy, and the AFC winner receives the Lamar Hunt Trophy.

In the Playoffs, individual contracts and salaries no longer apply, with each player on the 53-man roster and injured reserve at game time taking home the same amount of money during the first two rounds of the playoffs, from the starting quarterback to the third-string cornerback.

Players will receive the following amounts for the 2020 NFL postseason, per the latest collective bargaining agreement:

Wild Card round:

Division Winners playing in Wild Card: $33,000

Non-Division winning Wild Card teams/Division Winner with 1st round bye: $30,000

Divisional Playoff Game: $33,000

Conference Championship Game: $59,000

Super Bowl

- Winning Team: $150,000

- Losing Team: $75,000

The maximum a player can make in the 2020 playoffs is $275,000, but they must play on a team that won its division but is playing in the Wild Card round (Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans this season). Payments during the playoffs must be made within 15 days after a game has been played.

Postseason money for Wild Card and Divisional Playoff games is slightly less than the weekly pay of a player making the $610,000 first-year player minimum salary ($35,882 per week).

In the conference championships and in the Super Bowl, certain players could see the payout cut in half.

Players getting the full amount

1. Players on the 53-man roster on the active or inactive list when the game is played that have been on the roster for at least three previous games (regular season or playoffs).

2. Players on the 53-man roster not on the active or inactive list when the game is played but have been on the roster for at least eight previous games (regular season or playoffs).

3. Veterans (at least one year of service) put on injured reserve during the regular season that are still under contract when the game is played.

Half Amount

1. Players on the 53-man roster when the game is played that have been on the roster for less than three previous games (regular season or playoffs).

2. Players on the 53-man roster not on the active or inactive list when the game is played but have been on the roster for at least three and no more than seven previous games (regular season or playoffs).

3. First-year players put on injured reserve during the regular season that are still under contract when the game is played.

Notable Championship games:

1967 (The Ice Bowl)

GREEN BAY 21, DALLAS 17—Bart Starr snuck over from 1 yard out with 13 seconds remaining to give the Packers the victory in “The Ice Bowl.”

The temperature was 13°-below at game time, and the icy winds made it feel considerably colder. The Packers, seeking their third consecutive NFL title, jumped to a 14-0 lead on 2 touchdown passes from Bart Starr to Boyd Dowler. But Dallas’ defense rebounded, forcing 2 fumbles that led to a touchdown and a field goal to make it 14-10 at half- time.

It stayed that way until the fourth quarter when running back Dan Reeves threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Lance Rentzel to give Dallas a 17-14 lead.

With 4:50 to play, Green Bay mounted a 12-play, 68-yard drive. On third down from the Cowboys’ 1, with no timeouts left, the Packers eschewed the tying field goal and went for the winning touchdown, which Starr delivered by following the block of guard Jerry Kramer.
