How players qualify for The Masters

 There are 19 categories by which a player can earn an exemption into the Masters golf tournament, held annually at Augusta National golf course located in Augusta, Georgia.

There are 87 players who are eligible and expected to play in the 83rd Masters, which starts Thursday. 

There is also a Special Invitation: For 2019 it's Shigo Imahira.

Here is a look at how each of the participants qualified (Note: players qualifying via multiple categories are listed under the first by which they qualified.):

1. Masters champions (lifetime exemption): Angel Cabrera, Fred Couples, Trevor Immelman, Zach Johnson, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Phil Mickelson, Larry Mize, Mark O Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal, Charl Schwartzel, Adam Scott, Vijay Singh, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Mike Weir, Danny Willett, Ian Woosnam, Sergio Garcia, and last years champion Patrick Reed.

2. U.S. Open champions (last five years)

3. The Open champions (last five years)

4. PGA Championship champions (last five years)

5. The Players Championship winners (last three years)

6. Current Olympic gold medalist: None

7. Current U.S. Amateur champion and runner-up

8. Current British Amateur champion

9. Current Asia-Pacific Amateur champion: None

10. Current Latin America Amateur champion

11. Current U.S. Mid-Amateur champion

12. First 12 players, including ties, from 2018 Masters

13. First four players, including ties, from 2018 U.S. Open

14. First four players, including ties, from 2018 Open

15. First four players, including ties, from 2018 PGA Championship

16. Winners of full-FedEx Cup point PGA Tour events since 2018 Masters

17. Qualifiers for 2017 Tour Championship

18. Top 50 players in final world rankings of 2018

19. Top 50 players in world rankings the week prior to 2019 Masters
